Tanker goes missing with 22 crew members onboard

A UK-based tanker owner and operator said that it has lost communication with one of its tankers off the coast of West Africa.
The 11,999 dwt, 2005-built product tanker Barrett which was at anchor off Benin, West Africa has not been heard from since January 9 this year.
Barrett was reportedly scheduled to enter Cotonou port, on the morning of January 10.But the vessel remained missing, with the shipowner still not able to establish contact.
“It’s been alerted to local maritime authorities and are exploring all possible options and efforts as they continuously monitor the situation,” source said in a statement.
“Whilst we are tirelessly working to locate the vessel, our primary concern is for the 22 crew on board and ensuring their safety.”
The owner said that it regularly operates from ports in the region and has a rigorous safety and security protocol.
“Crews are repeatedly drilled in all safety and emergency procedures,” it said.that it has a fleet of 46 product and chemical tankers.
